LAS VEGAS Rapper Tupac Shakur was shot three times and
critically wounded, police said Sunday. Shakur, 25, was in critical condition Sunday, said Pat Morris, a nursing administrator at University Medical Center. Shakur and Death Row Records chairman Marion Suge Knight were both wounded in a chase and shootout on the Strip, according to KVBC-TV in Las Vegas. The two had attended the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon
boxing match at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on Saturday night and were apparently headed to a local nightclub, the station said. They were riding in what was described by the station as a black BMW when a white, four-door Cadillac with four people inside pulled alongside at the intersection and one person opened fire, hitting Shakur three times, police said. Police said Knight received a minor gunshot wound in the head and was expected to be treated and released. Police were reportedly questioning witnesses and had pulled over several people, but had made no arrests early Sunday.
LAS VEGAS - Rapper Tupac Shakur, shot in the chest in a drive-by attack near the city's casino strip over the weekend, was in critical condition Monday after undergoing a second operation.
Shakur, who has a history of violence and trouble with the law, was riding in a convoy about 11:15 p.m. Saturday when a white Cadillac with four men pulled alongside and a gunman opened fire, police said.
Shakur was hit several times in the chest. He was in intensive care after undergoing a second operation Sunday night to repair internal injuries, said Dale Pugh, a University Medical Center spokesman.
The attack came as Shakur was riding in a black BMW driven by Death Row Records Chairman Marion "Suge" Knight, whose Los Angeles-based company specializes in rap.
Knight was grazed in the head by a bullet fragment or shrapnel from the car. He was treated at University Medical Center and released Sunday afternoon, said nursing supervisor Kathy Brown.
No arrests had been made by late Sunday night, police said.
Shakur and Knight were attacked as they headed to a nightclub after watching Mike Tyson defeat Bruce Seldon in a title fight. It was unclear who the intended target was, police said.
The shooting was the latest incident in Shakur's violent history.
In November 1994, he was shot five times while being robbed in the lobby of a Manhattan recording studio. The rapper lost $40,000 worth of jewelry.
Shakur has also been arrested at least a half-dozen times in the past three years. He served eleven months in a New York prison for a sex abuse conviction and was released last year.
The rapper, who starred opposite Janet Jackson in the movie Poetic Justice, is working on another film, Gridlock. His latest album, All Eyez On Me, has sold at least 6 million copies.
LAS VEGAS (Reuter) - Surgeons have removed the right lung of rap music star Tupac Shakur who was shot four times and critically wounded when the car he was riding in was hit by a hail of gunfire, officials said Monday.
Police said they had few leads in their investigation of the brazen shooting near the famed Las Vegas strip on Saturday night and appealed to the public for information about Shakur's assailants. No arrests have been made so far.
Shakur remained in critical condition said Dale Pugh, a spokesman for the University Medical Center. Doctors removed his right lung in one of two operations on Sunday because he was so badly injured, Pugh said.
Shakur may need more operations although none was scheduled, Pugh said. Several of Shakur's relatives, including his mother, an aunt and a brother, had come to the hospital, he said.
The attack occurred while Shakur, one of the most notorious
performers of hardcore ``Gangsta'' rap, was headed for a nightclub with friends in a convoy of 10 cars after watching the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon heavyweight boxing title fight.Shakur's black BMW stopped at a red traffic light when a white Cadillac pulled up alongside and a gunman inside fired at least nine bullets, several of them striking Shakur who was in the passenger's seat, police said. The Cadillac, which police say was occupied by two to four men, then sped away.
It was the second time in less than two years that Shakur, a 25-year-old singer-actor with a history of violence and trouble with the law, had been shot. Marion ``Suge'' Knight, 31, co-founder of the controversial music label Death Row Records, was driving the car and suffered a minor gunshot wound to the head, police said.
Knight, who produces the work of Shakur and other top rap stars, was treated and released Sunday.
Sgt. Keven Manning, the detective in charge of the investigation, said police assumed Shakur was the target since the shots were fired at the passenger side.
At a news conference, police appealed to the public for information. They said the Cadillac was believed to have California or Nevada license plates, but no one had been able to give them any numbers or letters on the plate.
Las Vegas police have been in contact with law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles about the shooting but that has so far turned up no new information, Manning said.
Las Vegas police spokesman Greg McCurdy said investigators had not yet been able to interview Knight but were trying to reach him through his attorney. McCurdy accused members of Shakur's entourage of being uncooperative with investigators.
The Los Angeles Times cited acquaintances on Monday as saying Knight and his entourage had an altercation earlier in the evening with a local street gang at odds with the Bloods gang that hails from Knight's old neighborhood in Compton, a poor, mostly black community near downtown Los Angeles.
One executive familiar with the shooting told the newspaper the attack may have stemmed from that confrontation. But McCurdy described the report as ``unsubstantiated rumor.''
Las Vegas police are asking the public for help in finding the person who shot rap music star Tupac Shakur. Police Thursday offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunman who opened fire on Shakur's car from a white Cadillac in Las Vegas last Saturday night, hitting him four times. Detectives said they have interviewed Marion ''Suge'' Knight, 31, co-founder of Los Angeles-based Death Row Records, who was with Shakur at the time of the shooting. But police say Knight did not provide any clues. Shakur, remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit of a Las Vegas hospital.
Rap star Tupac Shakur's condition has improved slightly, officials said, and doctors have given him a better prognosis for survival.
Shakur was shot by an unknown assailant Saturday night after leaving the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand.
Marion "Suge" Knight, chairman of Los Angeles-based
Death Row Records, was driving Shakur on East Flamingo Road when a gunman pulled up along side them and emptied a semiautomatic pistol into the passenger side. Shakur was hit four times in the chest and abdomen. Police believe he was the target.Shakur, 25, was still in critical condition today at University
Medical Center, but the head of the hospital's trauma unit
said he had passed one critical phase. Doctors treating the
rapper did not return telephone calls.Dr. John Fildes, medical director of UMC'strauma unit, gave a general observation on Shakur's chances of survival. "Overall, all comers with a gunshot wound in the chest that passes through the blood vessels connecting the heart and lungs, only one in five survive," Fildes said. "The majority die in the first 24 to 48 hours, from shock and bleeding. ..." Fildes said patients with wounds similar to Shakur's also "die during the second major risk period, after five or seven days, when difficulties in oxygenation or the presence of infections or other complications arise." It's been six days since Shakur was shot. He underwent surgery twice on Sunday and once on Monday, and his right lung was removed.
Tupac died at 16:03 (East coast time) Friday, September 13th 1996.
